Guide on Criminal Procedure

 Last updated : February 26, 2025

This guide contains useful information on how to initiate an appeal, the subsequent steps to be followed and the documents to be filed.

Important

  • This guide only sets out information; it does not provide any legal advice.
  • It does not exempt you from reading the applicable laws and regulations.
  • Although individuals can represent themselves, we strongly recommend you consult a lawyer.
  • This guide deals with appeals in criminal matters and not with appeals in statutory penal matters (such as cases in first instance with the jurisdictional number 61). In penal matters, you must refer, among other things, to the Code of Penal Procedure and the Regulation of the Court of Appeal of Quebec in Penal Matters (R.C.A.Q.P.M.).
  • We remind you that the clerk will refuse any pleading or document that does not comply with the Court’s rules.
